Go the mighty Maroons!!

2017 Australian U15/Youth Championships, Brisbane.

On 8-9th July, a team of 55 eager, young Queensland Weightlifters from far and wide flocked to Cougars Weightlifting Club to take on the best U15/Youth lifters in Australia. Every presentation saw a flood of maroon in the line-up, with the first 2 sessions on Saturday morning topping the count, having an incredible 10-11 Queensland lifters in each session! How fortunate are we, having such a strong contingent of young lifters loving our sport and coming up the ranks.

To say this competition was a success is an understatement! Again, Queensland won all 4 team shields - U15 Male and Female and Youth Male and Female. This means that 2017 saw Queensland take home all 8 Team Shields at National Competition - an outstanding achievement for which we should all be so proud.

Congratulations to the following lifters on receiving Best Lifter Awards:-

Jett Gaffney - Best Lifter U15 Male

Saphire Abraham – Best Lifter Youth Female

Ben Ward – Best Lifter Youth Male.

Team Shield Presentation:

The enthusiasm and enjoyment of the sport shown by every lifter who competed was infectious. There were so many memorable individual performances over the 2 days of competition; many medals won and countless PB’s broken by our young Queensland athletes. Every session drew an impressive crowd of spectators, and the AWF live video link made it very easy for friends and family at home to keep up with the action.

Of course, every Team’s success is also the result of much hard work and co-ordination behind the scenes, before and during the event, by Team Coaches and Officials.

Queensland Team Officials: Angela Wydall (Head Coach), Miles Wydall (Coach), Regan Hams (Coach), Linzey Beister (Coach), Cameron Arthur and Kathy Cameron (Assistant Intern Coaches) and Sonia Stenhouse (Team Manager).

Recognition must also go to Deb Keelan, Acting General Manager, QWA, and Kylie Booth, QWA, for their tireless work in co-ordinating our team’s participation in this year’s Australian Championships.

Team Officials:

A very big thankyou to Cougars Weightlifting Club for hosting such a successful National Championships. Thank you to all their members who donated their time over the weekend to assist in any way. We understand the amount of work that goes into hosting an event such as this, and we certainly appreciate it.

So once again, well done to all athletes, parents, Clubs and coaches for your support in growing the sport of weightlifting in Queensland! It was a pleasure to meet you all over the weekend, and I had a lot of fun throughout the 55 weigh-ins and warmups, getting to know all our lifters. They are awesome kids! Time now to settle back into training, with plenty more weightlifting to come this year. Qld All Schools Championships, to be held 11 November 2017 at the Gold Coast, is another highlight for our young lifters, so mark that date on your calendar now. I look forward to see you there 😊
