COMPETITION AGE GROUPS 

  • Under 13: Aged 13 or under on 31st Dec of the competition year – modified event separate to other age-groups
  • Under 15: Aged 15 or under on 31st Dec of the competition year
  •  Youth (U17): Aged 17 or under on 31st Dec of the competition year
  •  Junior (U20): Aged 20 or under on 31st Dec of the competition year
  •  U23: Aged 23 or under on 31st December of the competition year
  •  Senior/Open: Competitors of any age
  • Masters: Turning 30 or over during the competition year.

Masters age groups: 
30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+. Note: the year you turn 40 you are in the 40-44 category

 

QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

The minimum standards for entry in the Qld Senior Championships is Senior State (Q) for men and women.

The minimum standard for entry in the Qld Junior & U23 Championships is Junior & U23 State (Q) both men and women.

The minimum standard for entry in the Qld Youth Championships is Youth State (Q) both men and women.

There is no minimum qualifying standard for Qld U13, U15, School Age, or Masters Championships, although a minimum weight of 15kg is required for first attempts in the Masters competition.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

To be eligible for QWA representation at National Championship level, athletes must compete in the respective Queensland Championship event of the same year, or register for the competition and have an athlete exemption approved.

Regional members can elect to lift at a QWA endorsed local competition within 6 weeks of each State Championships to qualify for the National Championships that the competition relates to. This must be communicated to the QWA office when the competition results are submitted.

An exemption from these conditions may apply in special circumstances. Refer to Section 2 of the QWA Team Selection Policy.

COMPETING AS A MASTER

Athletes are Masters from the first of January in the year that they turn 30. The age groups for Masters are in 5-year increments: 30-34, 35–39, 40–44, 45–49, 50–54, 55–59, 60–64, 65–69, 70–74, 75–79, 80+

Lifting big weights is not a requisite with many Masters competitions having lower or no minimum entry standards. The minimum weight that can be attempted in QWA competitions is 15kg.

The QWA hosts an annual State Championships for Masters athletes, and additional opportunities include the annual AWF National Masters Championships and IWF World Masters Championships.
