The AWF National Senior Championships were held at the AIS in Canberra over three days of competition 18-20 November, and while Queenslanders laboured along under heatwave conditions back home the athletes and staff made the most of the cool weather in Canberra. All athletes competing at the event needed to have achieved a minimum of AWF E Grade to be eligible to enter. 34 athletes travelled from Queensland. Congratulations all on your performances!!
Queensland staff appointments included:
Team Manager Sonia Stenhouse
Head Coach Angela Wydall
Team Coaches Miles Wydall & Jackson Solofa
Assistant Coach Callum Hannay
Team Captains Tori Gallegos & Beau Garrett
Technical Officials Lesley Moyle International Cat 1 & Scott Mark National
They all worked hard behind the scenes in the lead up to the event and through the day of competition to ensure that the Queensland athletes were well supported in their competition endeavours.
All sessions were strongly contested with lots of battling for medal places – a great spectacle for the audience with medals only being secured in the final few lifts of most sessions.
The maroon standout of the event had to be the men’s 81kg category taking out the trifecta in fine style.
During the course of the weekend the AWF AGM was conducted. Gender equity on the AWF board was made firm with Angela Wydall (QLD) remaining on the board, joined by Lilly Coffa (VIC), Coral Quinell (QLD) & Rawene Tairi (QLD).
