***2018 - Its a Wrap!!***

It’s a wrap!!

What a year! And how fast did it fly by?! It is exciting to see our membership numbers reach just under 650 for the year.

A big thank you to the hard working Management Committee of Miles Wydall, Greg Hobl, Rawena Tairi, Rebecca Hopf, Callum Hannay, Angela Wydall, Robyn Morgan and Leanne Knox. We thank Angela Wydall for all her work on the QWA Committee over the period 2007-2018 as she steps up to take a position on the AWF Board. Damon Kelly has accepted the Management Committees invitation to fill the vacancy this causes.

It is very hard to believe that it was in April this year – feels like it was years ago already! that the 2018 Commonwealth Games were held at the Gold Coast with our very own Tai Clair Orr (Toomey) taking out the gold medal (Australia’s only Weightlifting Gold medal!!) in the F58kg bodyweight category setting new State and National records and finishing with personal best lifts of 86kg in the Snatch and 112kg in the Clean and Jerk. Our other Queensland representatives were Alyce Stephenson, Deborah Acason, Brandon Wakeling (AKA Dean Wakeling J)and Damon Kelly.

The QWA volunteers, TO’s, team athletes and coaches secured the best positions in the house to enjoy the full weightlifting extravaganza!!

We saw Ian Moir return from his management role at the event for a short time only to be snatched (pardon the pun) away by the AWF to take on the role of CEO. We wish him all the best and look forward to working with him in his new role. A big thank you to outgoing AWF CEO Mike Keelan for all his hard work in the role in the past 10 years.

In the second half of 2018 we saw the introduction of new bodyweight categories – causing a veritable storm of record breaking by our lifters.

A big thank you to a number of extra special members of the Weightlifting family for their support in 2018:

• Our anonymous financial donors of the National U15/Youth Championships team that competed in PerthC

• Miles Wydall for all of the work that he puts into the upkeep of the QWA website and resources;

• Tara Noonan for all her work in the volunteer Social Media & Marketing role;

• Thank you to Sean O’Neill (Rockhampton), Leanne Knox (Whitsundays), and Sonia Stenhouse (Miles) for successfully planning and running major competition events in Regional areas of Queensland.

• Bowen Stuart for live streaming events and IT support.

With Embracing 2018 Legacy Funding support we were able to deliver a Strong Coach, Strong Official Program that enabled existing QWA coaches the opportunity to upgrade to Level 2 and Level 3 status; and existing QWA referees to gain valuable competition experience at events throughout the State (Rockhampton, Proserpine and Miles) with Erika Yamasaki upgrading to International Cat 2 referee and Alex Croot and Lesley Moyle upgrading to International Cat 1 referee (highest level possible)

Looking forward to 2019 - The QWA is pleased to introduce the newest member of staff.
